In 1662, the first apples were picked in South Africa when the Dutch East India Company – the world’s first multinational company – founded the Cape of Good Hope as a refreshment outpost for passing ships. Fast forward to present day, South Africa is a major fresh fruit exporter with a dynamic industry.

This winter, the International Fruit Tree Association will build upon their 70-year history of exploring fruit tree growing regions around the world with a once-in-a-lifetime study tour to South Africa. The participants will bring back new orchard ideas, strategies, techniques and connections… all while discovering a fascinating country.

South Africa has been a long anticipated destination. It’s always interesting to visit the southern Hemisphere (bonus: fruit on the trees and sweet cherry harvest underway). SA’s microclimates and diverse agricultural landscape leads to innovative farming practices. Participants will gain insights into advanced techniques in irrigation, pest management, and crop protection that are tailored to different environmental challenges. Additionally, they will learn about effective post-harvest handling, packing, and export strategies that contribute to South Africa’s reputation as a global leader in fruit exports.

The Study Tour will be concentrated in the Western Cape where there is a dense concentration and diversity of tree fruits grown.

Fruit Tree Map

South African stone fruit growers produce plums, peaches, apricots, nectarines, and cherries, a total of around 350,000 tonnes per year. In reference to pome fruit, 1,400,000 tonnes of apples and 505,000 tonnes of pears are produced annually.

Read on as we highlight some of the people and places that will make our tour special.

Professor Wiehann Steyn, General Manager of Hortgro Science, will host our group in South Africa. Hortgro is a grower-funded industry organization that oversees the production, research and technology, communication, markets, and transformation needs of the pome and stone fruit industries of South Africa. Professor Steyn oversees Hortgro Science, the research and technology division, where he aims to help growers be globally competitive.

We’ll visit many farms to examine the fruit tree industry from different angles. For example, Dutoit Agri, one of the largest family-owned fruit growing, packing, and export operations. with apples, cherries, pears, peaches and nectarines, plums, and more. They are very progressive with netting, new technologies, and in-house research trials. Another excellent operator we’ll visit is Two-a-Day Group, one of the strongest technical management teams in growing and packing, with in-house research trials. They’re focused mainly on apples, pears, and rootstocks.

We will collaborate with Provar, an independent company that does pome and stone fruit cultivar and rootstock evaluation. They’re a data center for the latest in product development intelligence, focused on objectivity and impartiality. We’ll taste fruit with Provar and learn about new and popular varieties in South Africa.

After a few days spent networking and sightseeing in Cape Town, the study tour will be based in the charming university town, Stellenbosch. Known for its picturesque vineyards and Cape Dutch architecture, Stellenbosch is a perfect home base for our group. It’s a walkable city with quaint streets lined with oak trees, nearby world-renowned wineries, and lots of restaurants. Stellenbosch is also famous for being home to Stellenbosch University, a prestigious university especially known for research and innovation in AgriScience.

Onward Travel is known for planning thoughtful, interesting, and fun trips for small groups. Now, we are expanding what we can offer to our Onward Travel customer base by partnering as certified travel specialists with Viking Cruises and Uniworld Boutique River Cruises, as well as ClubMed All-Inclusive and Intrepid Travel Adventures. We can book cruises, vacations and tours for individuals or groups. So whether you’re traveling alone, with your spouse, with your family or a group of friends…we’re pleased to have the opportunity to organize your vacation!

We’ve thoughtfully chosen each of these companies. Read on in this post for more information about Viking and Uniworld, already popular with a number of Onward Travelers. ClubMed offers wonderful travel opportunities for those who want to get away as a family, especially those with young children. Molly has stayed at a few of their properties over the years and has always loved her experiences with her children and her husband on those vacations. Molly has also traveled with the other brand we’re newly engaged with, Intrepid Travel Adventures. Intrepid plans small group tours which are a bit more rustic than the Onward experience, and they go all over the world with some truly fascinating itineraries. Molly went to Vietnam with Intrepid and had a great trip. Onward Travel is happy to advise you on different destination and itinerary options with all of these partner companies.

In addition, we are proud to work with this group of brands as each is operating with respect for the environment, for their employees and for the local communities in the places where they do business. In 1978 ClubMed formed one of the first corporate business foundations so they could invest in regions where they have resorts with the mantra of “education and recreation for all,” and since then the ClubMed Foundation has expanded with a number of groundbreaking climate initiatives. Viking and Uniworld are also leaders in the travel industry when it comes to setting and achieving self-set sustainability goals, pushing for innovation from within their industry, and fostering a positive and enriching workplace. Additionally, Intrepid is an industry leader with an eye towards the healthy and low impact future of travel, as a certified B Corp they even offer sustainable travel training to their agents.

Viking Voyages

If you have ever been on a Viking or Uniworld Cruise, you know it is top notch. From the excursions to the food and wine, to the comfort of the rooms to the excellent service, both cruise lines go above and beyond for their passengers. So, why would you book a cruise using our services? Because we exhibit the same level of customer service for our travelers!

Bruce Grim and his wife Lynn recently returned from their fourth Viking cruise. They have done both ocean and river cruises and cannot say enough about their Viking experiences. “We haven’t considered booking any other cruise line because the service, the food and everything about Viking is fantastic,” said Bruce.

They booked their Viking Homelands cruise for a group of seven couples using Onward Travel because the Grims are valued customers, and they like the amenities that come with our trips. We previously planned a private group trip to Italy for them that included four cooking classes, vineyard visits with wine tastings, local markets, and boat rides. “That was a spectacular trip, and we’ve had great success with everything Onward Travel has planned for us,” said Bruce.

Bruce has also attended trips for the International Fruit Tree Association, which Onward Travel organizes. He and Lynn went to New Zealand with Molly and Kat in 2018. “That’s really where we got to know them well. We got to see them in operation and managing a group of 100+ people. We saw their confidence on that trip, and they’ve never let us down,” said Bruce.

Bruce usually adds trip extensions to his cruises, and he and Lynn spent four days in London after the recent cruise. “Onward Travel booked the most perfect hotel for us there because it was very strategically located,” said Bruce. “I have heard stories from others who have booked extended stays through Viking and did not have the best experience.”

One of the things the Grims love about Viking cruises is that the staff always goes above and beyond for their groups. “When we went to our favorite restaurant, they let our group of 14 people sit together at the captain’s table rather than breaking up the group into smaller tables which they could have easily done. There were partitions in the room, so we had a quiet area to enjoy our conversations,” said Bruce.

All Viking’s ocean ships have outside berths, so everyone has a balcony. But on this cruise, Bruce learned that the dividers between the outdoor balconies could be opened when the ship was docked. “Three couples had staterooms next to each other, so that meant the doors could be opened to create one large space which was perfect for cocktail parties before dinner or enjoying breakfast and coffee together as a group,” said Bruce.

Bruce says he is already planning his next Viking cruise which will be the Paris and D-Day river cruise and he will use Onward Travel to plan it. “This visit of D-Day sites and reliving some of the epic events of World War II is a trip I’ve always wanted to do. We will add on an extension at the front end of the cruise as well as the back end of the cruise, and I trust Onward Travel to plan that for us,” said Bruce.

Another benefit of having Onward Travel book your cruise is that groups of eight people or more will receive some fun swag for the trip! Here is a photo of Bruce’s group sporting their new look on the ship.

Bruce says he will continue to book cruises with Onward Travel because of our attention to detail and the convenience factor since we can also help with air travel and planning trip extensions. “They are exceptionally good at what they do. We will continue to use them for trip planning, and I certainly encourage anyone else to do the same,” said Bruce.

Uniworld Adventures

Like Viking, Uniworld has loyal travelers. Molly and Kat’s mom, Peggi Clauhs, recently returned from a cruise on the Rhine River where she traveled from Amsterdam to Basel, Switzerland for her husband’s 70th birthday celebration. The trip was even more special because two couples joined them, and it was a complete surprise. “We planned this trip over a year ago so that was an exceptionally long time to keep a secret. It was so cool to see Herb’s face when he saw our friends on the first night!” Peggi said.

River Cruise Group

This was Peggi’s second time doing a river cruise with Uniworld, which only travels on rivers and not oceans. She has not taken a Viking cruise yet, but she says that a lot of the people on her trip had also cruised with Viking and found the companies to be very comparable.

Peggi feels Uniworld stands out because of its staff, which she says could not be nicer. “The staff are from all over Europe and there is a broad range of ages. One of our servers was from Serbia, and he has been working with Uniworld for the past ten years. That is very impressive to me to have staff that has been with the company for such a long time,” said Peggi.

River cruise

The food on Uniworld cruises also receives accolades from travelers. “Each meal we had was delicious and there is a lot of variety. There is always a heart healthy menu as an option as well,” said Peggi.

River cruise food

One thing that differs between Uniworld and Viking is that Uniworld is more all-inclusive. All beverages are included, and the wine and beer are top shelf. Gratuity is included as well as all the excursions. Because Uniworld offers river cruises, the ships can dock right in the city.

Peggi liked the variety of excursions provided. “There’s always a historical walking tour and there are activities for the more adventurous like a cycling trip or hike. There are winery tours, and my favorite excursion was to a nice bakery that had gorgeous gardens. You can choose to do as many excursions as you like or none. They also pay incredible attention to detail, including a ‘gentle pace’ tour for those people with mobility difficulties. That’s a nice touch because those people are still able to participate but don’t hold up other travelers who may prefer a faster pace. There’s even a snack in your room when you return from an excursion,” said Peggi.

River cruise

There were just 106 travelers on Peggi’s cruise so it was small enough that she said you will start to recognize people after a couple of days. There were younger and older people, but most of the travelers were in their sixties. Uniworld markets heavily in Canada, so you can expect to have some Canadians on your trip. Like Viking, repeat travelers also receive a discount.

The entertainment was a standout for Peggi. “There were violinists, folk dancers, and other musicians, and they are all local performers. They would come on the ship, perform, and then get off the ship. Someone would give them a ride back to the location where they got on. It was all very well-orchestrated,” said Peggi.

River cruise entertainment

The casualness of Uniworld cruises is another draw for travelers. Unlike some cruises where you must dress up for dinner, you can wear the same clothing that you wear all day to dinner. There’s also a captain’s dinner one night so if you do like to dress up a little for dinner, you have that opportunity.

River cruise dinner group

Just like Bruce, Peggi added on time before and after her cruise to extend the trip. “It is always nice to get to your destination a little early. You start your trip rested and since usually the starting city is not included in the cruise package, you’ll want to spend some time there to see the sights. You can book travel extensions through the cruise line, but it is usually extremely expensive,” said Peggi.

Peggi and Herb wrapped up their trip in Switzerland and then stayed a few more days before leading Onward Travel’s recent tour Enchanting Isle: A Culinary and Cultural Adventure in Ireland. Of course, Onward Travel selected their hotels and helped with all those arrangements, too!

We are celebrating ten years of traversing the world together! Long before Molly and Kat launched this boutique travel company that just marked its tenth anniversary in March, they had been exploring the world on their own, inspired by their entrepreneurial mother and grandmother. They got bit by the travel bug at a young age and now have a successful business that is a leader in small group travel.

Travel on Repeat

In the past ten years, Onward Travel has led 100 tours, with an average of ten tours a year. We have worked with over 1,100 travelers over the years, with 45% of them becoming repeat travelers with our company.

“It’s not uncommon to take a trip and have at least a couple of people in the group who have traveled with us before. That’s been a really interesting part of the business to watch grow over the years. I think people come back because we offer good value, and we really like our travelers! At the end of a week of traveling together, everyone feels like they have gained new friends, and we really do stay in touch,” said Molly.

Kat says she looks forward to seeing regular travelers on her trip rosters. “Personal relationships form on these trips, and these travelers really do become my friends! When people come on a trip and meet the Onward Travel hosts and other former travelers, it makes them feel more comfortable. It’s inevitable people will bond with each other over the course of a week or more, and they make real connections. Many friendships have been forged on our trips,” said Kat.

What Makes Onward Special?

Onward Travel distinguishes itself from other tour companies because we offer one-of-a-kind, specialized experiences that Molly and Kat plan themselves. Each one is a special project that requires a lot of thought and work. You won’t find 50 similar trips with different departures listed on our website!

Kat says she feels the word “authenticity” can be overused in the travel industry, but Onward Travel trips really do offer experiences that you won’t find elsewhere. For example, in the Cook Like a Tuscan Tour, one of the highlights is a butchery lesson at Dario Cecchini’s restaurant in Panzano in Chianti. Many people make the pilgrimage to Panzano to eat there, but very few groups get a personalized lesson from the 8th generation butcher himself.

What’s Changed in the Past 10 Years?

To start, Molly and Kat are both mothers of young children now. Molly has two little girls and lives on her husband’s apple orchard in New York’s Hudson River Valley. Kat is now married, lives in Philadelphia, has a young daughter and an even younger son.

And how about this video for a blast from the past?

As for the business, Onward Travel has a lot more partners now, some of whom have been partners since the very beginning.

One of our favorite partners and closest friends is Chef Jenna Arcidiacono, the locally famous chef of Amore Trattoria Italiana in Grand Rapids, MI. Way back when Molly was still operating her food truck in Grand Rapids she and Jenna became friends through the local food scene and they had the idea to co-host a trip to Italy together. Years later, these Amore in Italy tours are one of our iconic offerings, and they fill up practically instantly with Chef Jenna’s local customers who are eager to experience Italy Jenna-style.

Onward Travel also partners with Chicago’s premier recreational cooking school The Chopping Block for our popular annual Cook Like A Tuscan culinary immersion program as well as other food-focused trips to some of the world’s most interesting gourmet destinations. .

Molly and Kat admit to fighting over who “got to” lead trips ten years ago, but today, they are working carefully to find the right people to share in that role. “It took a really long time for us to bring in other hosts. We aren’t necessarily interested in finding trained tour directors, but rather people who have vibrant personalities and interact with people on a personal level,” said Molly.

For example, Barbara Bandinelli has been working with Onward as a local guide for over seven years. She lives in Florence, Italy and her fun and interesting walking tours have long been a highlight of our travelers’ Tuscan experience.  Now you’ll find Barbara hosting several Onward Travel tours each year and we couldn’t be happier to have her on our team.

Although the business continues to expand in number of tour guides, partners and even some new part-time staffers, Molly and Kat say they are very intentional about the growth of their company. “We often feel pressure to offer more tours, but since we do all of the planning ourselves and it takes a lot of time, we must be intentional about the growth. We continue to add destinations each year, and we are excited to travel to Scotland and Sicily this year,” said Molly. “We are also working to provide even more value on our trips, and our priority will always be quality,” added Kat.

Custom and New Services

Another new destination this year is to South Africa for the International Fruit Tree Association. Since 2017, Onward has done three large-scale tours with IFTA (some for as many as 250 people), and this year’s tour will have more than 100 travelers. Collaborating with IFTA has been a professional highlight for Kat & Molly and as they really value the community-building that these tours foster between industry professionals and their focus on education and innovation.

This custom travel experience is available for corporate gatherings or family journeys with a minimum of ten people, and includes Molly and Kat’s expertise in planning the perfect tour to meet your goals.

We have also become travel specialists with other brands such as Viking Cruises, Intrepid Travel Adventures, ClubMed All-Inclusive and Uniworld Cruises

Sisters’ Take

Molly & Kat & Kids Eating Ice Cream

Each sister brings a different set of self-described skill sets to the table: Molly is the organizer while Kat is the creative. Together, they provide a personalized level of service for each small group.

They both started out planning trips for their mother’s cooking school and enjoyed it so much they believed they could create a viable business. Ten years later, that has come true. The sisters say they have grown up within the business. “I look back at myself ten years ago and I see a woman who had a lot of courage to take a group of travelers to Italy without having been myself,” said Molly. “We feel very lucky to still be able to travel for a living and get off the beaten path while we go behind the scenes and learn about the world alongside our travelers,” said Kat.

Onward Travel

Nearly three years ago, Kat and I founded Onward Travel with a simple website and a serious passion for travel. We’d grown up observing our mother and grandmother host culinary tours all over Europe and the U.S. (with fabulous partners like David Geen of Villas & Vines) and we wanted to plan and organize trips with the same approach: small groups, unique experiences, amazing food, excellent accommodations, soul-filing comradery, and fabulous destinations…

Fast forward a few years, and we’ve hosted trips to New Orleans, Iceland (three times!), Charleston, Florida’s Gulf coast (twice), the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, San Francisco, Tuscany, Spain’s Basque Country, Belgium, Northern Italy, Austin, the Chesapeake Bay… and at the time of writing, we have upcoming adventures to New Mexico, Iceland, the Czech Republic, Michigan, Tuscany, Sicily and the Netherlands!

We’re so excited to be sharing our travel style and passion with folks. This new website (with this shiny new blog) feels hard-earned and exciting! Thanks for reading and being part of our travel-loving community. We hope you’ll check back to see what’s new and stay in touch through Passport, our email newsletter.
